Alfalfa as a mulch placed around the base of the plant, above ground, maintains moisture as it has a sponge-like ability to absorb and hold water. The mulch also reduces the occurrence of weeds.

Because the alfalfa contains high levels of nitrogen, it decomposes rapidly, allowing for the nitrogen to be fed into the soil. It also contains phosphorous, potassium and other trace minerals beneficial to your plants. Finally, triacontanol present in alfalfa is a natural growth stimulant.
